Codex desktop cannot see models

Quick fix

Sign in to official ChatGPT, enable “Keep official login when switching to third parties,” and enable local routing. Restart Codex.

Error output
就是桌面端无法看到模型
English translation

The desktop app simply cannot see models.

The Codex desktop app uses the presence of an official ChatGPT login session to decide whether to show third-party custom models. Without an official login session, the model selector may fall back to the official default model; even when `codex debug models` lists third-party models, the desktop app’s “Custom” category may still be empty.

This cluster also includes other variants: some reports say the catalog field names do not match the parsing contract in Codex ≥0.144, or that `model` and `model_catalog_json` are lost when taking over and rewriting `config.toml`; another report says aggregate mode cannot read the official or local Codex model list. The maintainer said the incomplete takeover configuration in v3.16.0 was fixed in v3.16.1 + 3.16.2, but reports describe different behavior in v3.16.2, v3.16.3, and v3.20.2.

  1. Sign in to an official ChatGPT account once in the Codex desktop app to ensure official login credentials are present.

  2. In cc-switch settings, enable “Keep official login when switching to third parties.”

  3. Confirm that local routing or route takeover is enabled for the third-party provider, then fully quit and restart the Codex desktop app.

  4. If a message says the aggregate model list cannot be read, check whether `codex --version` and `codex debug models --bundled` produce output, and confirm that CC Switch can access `chatgpt.com`.

  5. If the model list is still empty after restarting, check whether the takeover-modified `~/.codex/config.toml` still contains `model` and `model_catalog_json`; an unresolved report for this issue exists in v3.20.2.

Why does the desktop app not show third-party models even though `codex debug models` lists them in the terminal?
This suggests the data layer may be working and the issue may be limited to the desktop display layer. Follow the steps to preserve the official login session and restart Codex.
What if I am not comfortable signing in to a ChatGPT account?
The issue provides no equivalent solution that avoids signing in to an official ChatGPT account.
The model works but is not visible in the lower-right corner. Will signing in again restore it?
One user reported that after connecting Codex through cc-switch, signing out and then signing in with a ChatGPT account made the model visible in the lower-right corner again.
How should I configure things when aggregate models are temporarily unavailable or the Codex model list cannot be read?
Check that the local Codex CLI works, that `codex debug models --bundled` outputs JSON, and that CC Switch can access `chatgpt.com`; then exit aggregate mode and enter it again.
