Unsupported content type: redacted_thinking — Claude Code
Quick fix
For OpenRouter routes, use a proxy to filter redacted_thinking. Codex/GPT routes have no confirmed fix; upgrade to the latest version and retest.
Symptom
Section titled “Symptom”Unsupported content type: redacted_thinkingWhen Claude Code uses OpenRouter or Codex/GPT routes, the upstream response may contain a `redacted_thinking` content block. For OpenRouter, reports indicate that its Anthropic-style streaming event conversion produces content blocks incompatible with the Claude Code VS Code extension. Reports involving Codex/GPT routes also show this internal reasoning block being returned directly to Claude Code without filtering or conversion before the client response.
OpenRouter users confirmed that filtering this content block through a proxy resolves the problem. The related Codex/GPT route issues provide no similarly confirmed fix. The maintainer only recommended upgrading to the latest version and retrying after the 4.0 refactor, but a user reported that the error still occurs in 4.0.5. Response decoding failures, 422 upstream overload errors, and timeouts also appeared in the threads; these are separate accompanying errors and are not covered by the same fix.
If you use OpenRouter, run the `openrouter-proxy` confirmed effective in the issue so it filters the `redacted_thinking` content block.
Change the Claude Code OpenRouter address from `https://openrouter.ai` to the local proxy at `http://127.0.0.1:8899`; multiple users confirmed that this resolved the problem.
C:\Users\<your_username>\.claude\settings.json https://openrouter.aihttp://127.0.0.1:8899If you use a Codex/GPT route, first update CC Switch to the latest version and retest. The existing issues provide no confirmed built-in filtering solution, and the problem was still reported in 4.0.5.
If the problem persists after upgrading, report it again with the CC Switch version, operating system, complete reproduction steps, and logs or screenshots.

- How can I fix this problem?
- When using OpenRouter, run the `openrouter-proxy` mentioned in the issue and change the Claude Code OpenRouter address to `http://127.0.0.1:8899`; multiple users confirmed that this works.
- The Claude Code Extension cannot connect to the target after I run the proxy. What should I change?
- The thread recommends editing `C:\Users\<your_username>\.claude\settings.json` and changing the address from `https://openrouter.ai` to `http://127.0.0.1:8899`; there is no evidence that `proxy.js` must be modified.
- Was the problem fixed after upgrading to 4.0?
- This cannot be confirmed. The maintainer recommended upgrading to the latest version and retrying, but a user reported that the error still occurs in 4.0.5.
- Is there a confirmed working fix for Codex/GPT routes?
- These issues document no confirmed built-in fix. The related discussion only states that the `redacted_thinking` content block should be preserved, converted, or filtered before the response is returned to Claude Code.
