Skill source directory missing SKILL.md; Claude Code skill installation fails

Cause

Section titled “Cause”

These issues all involve failures installing through Skills management or skills.sh, but the triggers differ. In #4141, the same-named directory in the repository is a Claude Code plugin package, and the actual SKILL.md is deeper in a subdirectory. In #6365, skillId differs from the directory containing SKILL.md, and SKILL.md is not at the repository root, so the installer cannot resolve the source directory. #7013 reports that the archive has more than 10000 entries; a comment says this was fixed in PR #7489. #2078 does not provide readable error text or a specific cause.

Fix

  1. Check the skill repository’s directory structure and confirm the actual skill directory contains SKILL.md. If SKILL.md is in a nested directory, confirm the installer can resolve that directory as the target skill.

  2. If you encounter an error that the archive has more than 10000 entries, use a version containing the fix. The issue comment says this was fixed in PR #7489, but does not provide a fix version number.
